How do I obtain a copy of a criminal/traffic collision report and how much does it cost?

You may request for it in person through our Public Services Unit or submit for it in writing through our Correspondence Unit.(clickhere for location and directions) (click here for services and fees)

A traffic collision report is $12.00 per report.  All other reports are 75 cents per record and three cents per page.  If we are required to search for your request (i.e. no file number), the cost will be 75 cents per record plus three cents per page (if you want a copy), plus $22.50 per hour after the first full hour has been expended on your request.(click here for additional fees information) 

Please note that we release copies of reports to victims only, in accordance with the Public Records Act, Government Code Section 6254.


How long will it take to obtain a copy of a report?

If you request for it by mail, please allow for a minimum of 10 business days.

If you request for it in person, it may take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours depending upon the time of day that you arrive. Our peak time periods are: Monday through Friday from 11:00 am to 3:30 pm. (click here for business hours)


Do we have records that go back as far as 1980 or 1990?

We maintain records in accordance with our retention schedule and in general, have records as far back as 10 years.


Do you have juvenile records?

In general, we do maintain some juvenile records; however, these records are only accessible to those entitled under the State Welfare and Institutions Code Sections 827-828.3.  Persons not authorized must obtain a court order to obtain the record.


Do I need an appointment to register as a narcotics or arson offender?

No. We operate on a first come first serve basis Mondays through Thursdays from  7am to 4pm. Our peak hours are from 11am to 3:30pm, so try to come early.   Bring a valid identification and Narcotics Registration Form.click here for business hours


As part of the registration process, do I have to come in to the office to change my address or can I mail it in?

You will need to come in person to receive a new registration receipt.


Do you do other Live Scan services?

Yes, we fingerprint using the Live Scan process, for the following services:

  • Applicant for Permits, Licenses, Certifications, Teaching Credentials, Notary Public, Safety Police/Peace Officer positions, etc.

Fingerprints will be submitted electronically and a fee of $14 (rolling charge) and $32 DOJ and/or a $19 (electronic submission) fee will be collected at the time services were rendered.  We do not fingerprint for Immigration and Naturalization Services(INS). Do you accept credit cards?

At this time the only forms of payment accepted are: cash, personal checks, money orders, or cashier's check made payable to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.


Do you do Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) clearance letters (Police Clearance letters)?

Yes, we provide INS clearance letters. Please ensure that you have brought yourINS letter and a valid government issued picture identification card, such as a driver's license with you when you come to our office.  Please note, we do not release copies of police reports to those listed as suspects on the reports, pursuant to Government Code Section 6254(f).

Can I drop off my request and have you mail it to me?

No, requests in PSU cannot be mailed; however, you can drop off your request and pick it up at a later time .
